week 7 - Computer Controlled Machining : Local Session#

  • Author : Kai Naito , Asako Okazaki, Yosuke Tsuchiya (Fablab Kamakura)
  • Date created : 2/20/2019
  • Last updated: ⅜/2023

Assignments & Goal#

Group assignment#

  • do your lab’s safety training
  • test runout, alignment, fixturing, speeds, feeds, materials, and toolpaths for your machine

Individual Assignments#

  • make (design+mill+assemble) something big (~meter-scale)
  • extra credit: don’t use fasteners or glue
  • extra credit: include curved surfaces

Learning outcomes#

  • Demonstrate 2D design development for CNC production
  • Describe workflows for CNC production

Have you?#

  • Linked to the group assignment page
  • Documented how you designed your object (something big)
  • Documented how you made your CAM-toolpath
  • Documented how you made something BIG (setting up the machine, using fixings, testing joints, adjusting feeds and speeds, depth of cut etc.)
  • Described problems and how you fixed them
  • Included your design files and ‘hero shot’ of your final product

Refer to Assessment page

Advices from Instructors#

  • Overview of Assignment Works

  • To be done before cutting:.

    • Design the assignment, prepare 2D vector data (dxf, svg, etc.), and even CAM data production. The data should be parametric so that it can immediately reflect the actual measurements of the material and the results of the condition setting on the day of the workshop.
    • Modeling notes:
      • (group) Model to match “Test runout, alignment, speeds, feeds, and toolpaths”. At a minimum, offset measurements are acceptable, and horizontal and vertical measurements should be taken to determine what the model will look like under the current conditions.
      • Conditions:
        • machining area is 900mm x 1800mm, only one 900mm x 1800mm scale material for each assignment (one for group assignment, each student can use one material for individual assignment)
        • Bits are only ¼ down cut…
        • Other conditions modeling for measurement will be marshed…
        • Priority to individual assignments.
      • Sample: Offset (kerf in CCC) Generator by Atsufumi Suzuki (2022 Graduate from Kamakura)
      • (Individuals) Models should be made using CNC cutting, and joints should be made for ease of use.
      • (Individuals) 3D models will be made by Mold & Casting, so 2D models are fine.
      • (Individuals) Due to the fact that we will be borrowing the work space, we cannot extend the work period. Each person should try to keep the cutting time within 2 hours - if there are many pockets or if kerf bending is used a lot, the cutting time tends to be longer.

IMPORTANT! We will borrow an outside lab (23’: Fab Lab Minatomirai).#

  • Please be punctual
  • Safety precautions
  • Waste materials are to be brought back to the workshop.

Safety precautions

  • Wear safety glasses
  • No sandals
  • No loose-fitting clothing
  • Long hair must be tied up
  • No gloves
  • No touching energized tools
  • Do not operate machines alone
  • Know how to perform an emergency stop before starting equipment
  • Pay attention to machine works, and stop immediately if anything trouble happens.
